Ingredients

For Cooking the Dal & Rice:

1 cup Basmati Rice

1 cup Green Gram Dal (Moong Dal)

as needed Water

1 tsp Salt

1 tsp Turmeric Powder

For the Masala & Tempering:

1 tbsp Oil

Clarified Butter (Ghee): 2 Tbsp (1 Tbsp for tempering + 1 Tbsp to finish)

1 tsp Cumin Seeds

1 no. Bay Leaf

1 inch Cinnamon Stick

Aromatics: Chopped Ginger, Chopped Garlic, & 1 Green Chilli

1 medium Onion (chopped)

1 large Tomato (chopped)

1 tsp Red Chilli Powder

1 tsp Cumin Powder

1 tsp Coriander Powder

1 tsp Asafoetida Powder (Hing)

1 tsp Garam masala Powder (Hot Spices)

1 tsp Salt

For garnishing Fresh Coriander

Wash and soak 1/2 cup basmati rice and 1/2 cup moong dal in separate bowls for 30 minutes.

Transfer the soaked rice and dal to a pressure cooker. Add enough water to immerse them completely, along with 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp turmeric powder. Cook on a medium flame for 3-4 whistles.

In a pan, heat 1 tbsp oil and 1 tbsp ghee. Add 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 bay leaf, and 1 cinnamon stick. Once aromatic, add chopped ginger, chopped garlic, and 1 chopped green chilli. Saute well.

Add 1 chopped onion and saute until transparent. Then, add 1 chopped tomato and cook until soft and mushy.

Add 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp red chilli powder, 1/2 tsp cumin powder, 1/2 tsp coriander powder, 1/4 tsp hing, and 1/2 tsp garam masala. Mix everything well.

Add the cooked rice and dal mixture to the pan. If the consistency is too thick, dilute it with hot water. Finally, finish with 1 tbsp ghee and garnished with chopped coriander leaves.
